 THE PROGRAMS

   This unique high school prepares young people for careers in the health care field.   Students can earn a state vocational certificate and complete college prerequisites while earning a high school diploma.  In addition, students have important opportunities to acquire actual hands on clinical experience.  Instruction includes hospital shadowing, lectures by health professionals, and other direct exposures to health careers. 

ELIGIBILITY

Any 9th, 10th, or 11th grade students currently enrolled in the Cleveland Municipal School District may apply to Health Careers Center.

HEALTH CARE WORKER/FOUNDATIONS for HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS

  •    These exploratory courses, developed specifically for 9th and 10th grade students, teach the fundamentals of health careers, health topics, and employability skills.

Specialized Training at the 11th and 12th grade level

  •    Dental Assistant – Development of skills in taking x-rays, impressions, polishing teeth, transferring instruments, and preparing dental materials.  This program includes inventory control, billing and appointment scheduling.

  •     Nurse Assistant – Prepares students to become State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNA) with classroom, simulated lab, and clinical experience in bedside nursing care such as bathing, measurement of vital signs, ambulation of residents/patients, and assisting with all aspects of activities of daily living (ADL).

  •     Medical Assistant – Development of skills in both administrative and clinical duties, including maintaining records, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and completing insurance forms.  Students also learn how to prepare patients for examinations, correspondences,  measure vital signs, obtain medical histories and perform routine office laboratory procedures.

  •     Dental Lab Assistant – Development of skills in the dental fabrication industry, including molding, carving, shaping, casting models from impressions, properly placing and arranging artificial teeth in dental appliances, coloring and staining denture materials, repairing, replacing, and relining complete dentures.
