 THE PLAY

AT RISE: J & K at a restaurant table. A dessert on a plate between them.

J: Ohmigod, this is - mmmm. Ohhh! Taste it.

K: No, thanks.

J: Ambrosia. Heaven. Cherubs are flying down, with this in their chubby little hands. You've got to try -

K: You know I can't.

J: God, I envy your self-control.

K: Two more sizes, that's eight more weeks, at least. I'm not blimping down that aisle.

J: He's not worth it. Not compared to this. Ohhh, what is that - I can't quite identify, some kind of tang - cinnamon? Allspice? You'll know in an instant, you're the expert.

K: I really can't.

J: It's like a little dart in the tongue - there, between the chocolate & the charlotte russe, some kind of -

K: Chipotle.

J: You're kidding. That's a chili.

K: Eight bucks a slice, it's probably chipotle. (beat) What do you mean, he's not worth it?

J: Joke.

K: No, it wasn't.

J: It's just, what's with this sudden obsession about your weight? Now you can't even taste a dessert? It's a party, for crying out loud, not a coronation.

K: It's only eight more weeks.

J: No, it isn't. It's your life. Your whole life. (beat) How are you cooking without tasting anything?

K: I haven't been cooking. Much. We've been too --

J: Oh God. My friend has been abducted by aliens, somebody left a pod by --

K: Fine. Thanks for your generous and unconditional support. It's appreciated. Now I have to --

J: Settle down. Christ on a bike, you're touchy these days.

K: Must be the fat cells. Calling for help. "I'm lonesome. I need some friends." (laugh) (beat)

J: You're sure. (beat) About the dessert, dummy.

K: You left a bite.

J: It's too rich for one person. When something is this good, it's wrong not to share it.

K: Yes, I'm sure.

A beat -- K reaches out with her fork.
