 THE PLAY

AT RISE: MRS. JONES, a woman on a cordless phone. She holds it between shoulder and ear, so her hands are free. A laundry basket is at her feet, filled with men's underpants and shorts. As she talks, she takes out one after another, and systematically cuts heart shapes through the crotch with pinking shears.

MRS. JONES

Hello, Bank One? Do you have an upper limit on cash withdrawals? I need to close out an account. Oh, good. Thanks.

SHE hits the speed dialer.

Matt! What are you doing on phone duty? Ah.

So John's not back from lunch yet? (beat) Gee, that's a shame. And clearly the beautiful Valerie isn't either.

Well. Leave John a message, will you? Tell him I have a present for him. It'll be on the dining room table. When he gets home.

smiles

Yes, it's a surprise.

SHE admires her handiwork, then continues scissoring.

Listen, when you and Shelly went on that Caribbean cruise -- which island did you guys like best? (pause) How come? The coldest drinks, the bluest water. Sounds heavenly.

Oh. One more thing. Leave a message for Valerie too. Just write: "Thank you, and good luck. You'll need it."

Oh, she'll know what I mean. (smiles)

Happy Valentine's Day to you too!

END OF PLAY.
