 EXCERPT

[In a park near a playground swing, NADINE has been trying to help her partner MAIA interpret a troubling dream.]

NADINE

Think about it, Maia. You complain that I push you too much, but your dreamer knows better. (pause) Maybe this is about your going back to work.

MAIA

Uh-uh, no way!

NADINE

Oh yes, way. It's been three months, Maia. You need to get back to --

MAIA

I've needed time. Time to think.

NADINE

And think you have. You've taken walks, you've watched sunsets, you've read books - and those are all good things - but have you picked up a brush? The whole point was to give yourself --

MAIA

Space.

NADINE

Time, space, whatever. But it's not exactly making you more productive, is it?

MAIA

Productive!

NADINE

Hell, you painted more when you worked at Starbucks.

MAIA

I don't think my profound mythic dream is telling me to be a barista, Nadine. "Higher, higher" is not about latte foam!

MAIA pulls away. Fumes. A beat.

NADINE

Look, babe - you know it's not about the money. I make enough, it's not --

MAIA

Yeah.

NADINE

You spend too much time alone.

MAIA

Maybe.

NADINE

I worry. You get this haunted look, and --

A FEMALE FIGURE appears, upstage, in a long gauzy white dress.

MAIA

Franny was in the dream, too.

NADINE

Oh, geez. Why didn't you --

MAIA

I couldn't see her face but I knew it was her. She was wearing a long white dress.

NADINE

What, like a wedding dress?

MAIA

No. It was this gauzy thing, almost see-through.

NADINE

What was she doing?

MAIA

Just standing there. Radiating this - intensity.

NADINE

Did she say anything?

MAIA

Not with words. I don't remember words, just the feeling. She seemed - far away, but still so intense. (beat) God, I can't believe I finally dreamed about Franny. I wanted to for months, then I got so I was afraid I would dream about her. Funny.

NADINE

What's funny is that you didn't bring it up 'til now. I mean, Franny, my God, no wonder you - (beat) Was she watching you on the swing?

MAIA

Maybe. Yes, I think she was.

NADINE

How did you feel about her watching you? I mean, there we are, you're swinging away, pumping your legs, having fun --

MAIA

I don't know.

NADINE

She'd want you to, you know. Have fun. (beat)
