The Abbey

St. Andrew Abbey is one of 45 Benedictine monasteries scattered across the United States. The Abbey has thirty one monks which observe the Rule of St. Benedict. Like most Benedictine communities in this country, the Cleveland Benedictine's are not a cloister contemplative community, but balance the life of prayer within the cloister with active apostolic works for the good of the church. The Benedictine Monks came to Cleveland in 1922 to serve the spiritual needs of Slovak catholic immigrants.

The monastery is located on fifteen and a half acres of wooded property in a residential area on the southeast side of Cleveland about ten minutes from downtown. Since 1927, the major apostolic work of the community has been to conduct Benedictine High School.

Mission Statement

We are monks who choose to wholeheartedly seek and depend upon God the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit in every circumstance of our lives by living the Rule of Saint Benedict under the Abbot of Saint Andrew Svorad Abbey.

We strive for holiness and conversion in a common life of praising God through liturgy, lectio, silence, work and fellowship.

We share the Word of God and our Benedictine presence by fostering an environment for others to encounter God. We do this through such work and service that is supported by our community and compatible with its apostolates: hospitality, Catholic education, parish work and pastoral services to the Church.

Benedictine Life

Since the begining of Christianity, men and women have sought to experience God's presence in their lives by imitating the life of Jesus Christ. Followers have denied themselves the joy of marriage and children, of riches and wealth, the status and perks, the good life treasured by society.

A man who would live a monastic life, observe the Holy Rule of St. Benedict would be called a monk, devoted to God. The moderation and adaptability of the Holy Rule has insured the survival of Benedictinism for fifteen hundred years. The monk professes vows, solemn promises of Obedience - ( to the Abbot, superior of the Monastery) Conversion of Life, - ( a reordering of priorities in a life of celibacy and poverty) and Stability - ( a unique Benedictine vow that binds the monk to one particular monastery for life).
