About Paul Gothard

Paul Gothard III began the study of piano at age 10 with Dr. Harold Fink. Although Paul was composing and arranging on his own since the age of eight, serious study of composition did not occur until he entered Lake Erie College, where he studied with Harold Fink and David Gooding, and from where he graduated in 1973 with a BFA degree in piano performance and composition.

Paul was invited to join the faculty of Lake Erie College one year after he graduated, and a few years later, he received a master's degree in composition from Cleveland State University, where he studied with Bain Murray, Rudolph Bubalo, and Jules Drossin.

Paul has written music for diverse genres, including: theatre, modern dance, instrumental, chamber, electronic, and choral. In 1983, one of Paul's choral works, "Allelujah" for soprano and women's chorus, was selected for performance at the Aki contemporary music festival at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Paul has attended composer symposia with Alberto Ginastera, Aaron Copland, Hans Werner Henze, Donald Erb, Luciano Berio, and Witold Lutoslawski. In 1983, Paul chaired a composer's panel discussion with the late Leonard Bernstein on one of his conducting appearances in Cleveland with the Cleveland Orchestra.

Paul is currently a tenured Professor of Music and the Director of Fine Arts at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.
