Paul was invited to join the faculty of Lake Erie College one year after he graduated, and a few years later, he received a master's degree in composition from Cleveland State University, where he studied with Bain Murray, Rudolph Bubalo, and Jules Drossin.
Paul has written music for diverse genres, including: theatre, modern dance, instrumental, chamber, electronic, and choral. In 1983, one of Paul's choral works, "Allelujah" for soprano and women's chorus, was selected for performance at the Aki contemporary music festival at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Paul has attended composer symposia with Alberto Ginastera, Aaron Copland, Hans Werner Henze, Donald Erb, Luciano Berio, and Witold Lutoslawski. In 1983, Paul chaired a composer's panel discussion with the late Leonard Bernstein on one of his conducting appearances in Cleveland with the Cleveland Orchestra.
Paul is currently a tenured Professor of Music and the Director of Fine Arts at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.
